”The consequence of the single story is that it robs people of dignity. It makes our recognition of our equal humanity difficult and it emphasizes that we are different rather than how we are similar.” – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Music connects continents

Music connects: Within this workshop, we want to place our emphasis on what connects us, rather than what divides us. Even when it comes to music that originated from the African continent the portrayal in media etc, often re-produces stereotypes. Due to the fact that various African and African American music genres are not part of the Austrian school curriculum, little to nothing is known about it in our society.

In many educational policy forums, artistic and creative subjects are not brought to the fore. But it is precisely with music lessons, that important core competencies are conveyed; including empathy, social interaction and creativity. These characteristics are considered indispensable in anti-racism work and thus in reducing prejudices. (See more)
